Steve Nas is a senior well engineer with over 45 years of international experience in drilling and well engineering. Born in Nijmegen, Netherlands, and now living in South East Asia, he holds a master’s degree in Well Engineering from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. His expertise spans managed pressure drilling (MPD), underbalanced drilling, geothermal and HPHT well design, deepwater drilling, and CCS well integrity assessments.
Beginning his career in mudlogging in the late 1970s, Steve transitioned into freelance wellsite engineering across the Middle East and Africa before joining Shell UK in 1988, where he contributed to early horizontal and tieback wells in the SNS. He later became a key figure in the evolution of MPD and UBD technologies while with Weatherford, pioneering the first pressurized mud cap drilling from floaters and leading the first ultra-deepwater MPD operations in Indonesia.
Steve served in senior advisory and engineering management roles at Schlumberger, Wild Well Control, and Scanpower Technologies, delivering dynamic kill plans, well control training, and advanced modeling for blowout contingency and geothermal operations. As an independent consultant since 2017, he has led numerous geothermal and CCS well integrity assessments, deepwater abandonment reviews, and advanced drilling projects.
He is a recognized industry authority and prolific SPE contributor, having authored more than 25 technical papers. He is an independent well examiner, serves on the IADC Geothermal Committee, supports IWCF as a technical advisor, and remains an active instructor of well engineering related drilling courses worldwide.
